For us Brits today marks the release of the super-hyped Deus Ex Human Revolution. While my copy is downloading on Steam [30mins to go!] I thought I’d share my approach to how I’m going to be playing this game.
Here are my rules:
1 – A Maximum of two save game slots, I don’t want to give myself the option to roll-back on gut decisions or mistakes.
2 – Good guy, try not to kill unless caught in a situation where it is the only option.
3 – Let it play out, I’m just going to let this game play out as things happen, if I accidentally kill hostages through inaction or if I’m forced to have to sneak into a building because I couldn’t smart-mouth my way in. That’s just the way it’s going to be.
I feel that playing this way instead of pre-determining ‘absolutely no killing’ or reversing time based on a poor choice I may have made during a first play-through will actually stop me from enjoying the emergent gameplay. I’d like to leave this game with stories of how I got out of tricky situations or what happened after going through with initial decisions.
The no killing rule or perfect playthrough should come in the 2nd or 3rd plays of the story, not the first.
IMO…
Anyway, happy Deus Ex day!
*Update!*

I posted this 16 hours ago and have spent 8 hours playing, that’s half of my day more or less. Initial impression is that it is pretty good.
